Pots that shrink — Potters · The Makers
Mira wants to make a storage jar with a lid for the kitchen in Little Kiln Town. Master Odu warns her that clay does not stay the size she shapes it.
Your task
Pick the wisest answer at each step.
- Clay shrinks when the water leaves it, first while it dries and again in the kiln. A pot ends up around a tenth smaller than when it was shaped, a little more or less depending on the clay.
- Invented guild stories to learn from. Never try fire, hot metal, glass, blades or power tools on your own: crafts like these are learned with a trained adult.
- Every craft came from many people in many places. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Craft knowledge — You understood how this craft works.
- Making it well — You put the steps in a sensible order and used the right tools.
- Care for people & planet — You kept people safe and used materials wisely.
In real life
Industrial potters and tile makers still plan for shrinkage. A factory measures the clay again and again, so that every cup, lid and tile comes out the same size.
Potters
The guild stories are invented, to learn from. Fire, heat, blades and tools are only for trained adults: learn these crafts with a trained adult, never at home. Nothing about you is collected; progress stays on this device.
