The jug that keeps water cool — Potters · The Makers
On a hot day in the invented village of Claybrook, potter Rita fills an unglazed clay jug with water. It 'sweats' and the water stays cooler.
Your task
Is each sentence true or false?
- Unglazed fired clay is porous: tiny holes let a little water seep to the outside. When that water evaporates, it takes heat with it, so the jug and the water inside cool down.
- Invented guild stories to learn from. Never try fire, hot metal, glass, blades or power tools on your own: crafts like these are learned with a trained adult.
- Every craft came from many people in many places. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Craft knowledge — You understood how this craft works.
- Making it well — You put the steps in a sensible order and used the right tools.
- Care for people & planet — You kept people safe and used materials wisely.
In real life
Clay water jugs like the Portuguese 'bilha' or the Spanish 'botijo' have been used for centuries in hot, dry regions. In some countries, 'pot-in-pot' clay coolers with wet sand keep vegetables fresh without electricity.
Potters
The guild stories are invented, to learn from. Fire, heat, blades and tools are only for trained adults: learn these crafts with a trained adult, never at home. Nothing about you is collected; progress stays on this device.
