Black Holes — where gravity wins
A black hole is a place where so much mass is packed into so small a space that gravity folds in on itself and nothing — not even light — can climb back out. It is not a cosmic vacuum cleaner; it is a one-way door in space, and once you cross its edge, every path leads deeper in.
Galaxies — island cities of stars
A galaxy is a vast, gravity-bound city of stars, gas, dust and dark matter, turning slowly in space. Our Sun is just one ordinary star in one ordinary galaxy, the Milky Way — and the Milky Way is one of roughly two trillion galaxies we can see, each with billions of stars of its own.
Star Nurseries — where stars are born
A nebula is a giant cloud of gas and dust drifting between the stars, and the coldest, densest ones are where new stars are made. Gravity pulls a clump together until its core gets hot and dense enough to ignite, and a star switches on — so every star, including our Sun, began inside a cloud like this.
The Scale of It All — how big is big
The Hubble Deep Field is one of the most humbling pictures ever taken: astronomers pointed a telescope at a tiny, apparently empty patch of sky — about the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length — and stared for days. What came back was not black. It was thousands of galaxies, each one a whole city of stars, in a speck most people would call nothing.
How Stars Die — the most useful explosion
A star shines by fighting a war: gravity trying to crush it, and nuclear fusion in its core pushing back out. That balance can last billions of years — but when the fuel runs low, gravity finally wins, and how a star dies depends entirely on how heavy it is. Small stars fade away quietly; giant stars end in the biggest explosions in the universe.
Are We Alone? — the search for other worlds
For most of history, nobody knew whether other stars had planets at all. In just the last thirty years we have found thousands — worlds of lava, worlds of diamond, worlds orbiting two suns — turning the oldest question humans ask into real science: out of so many planets, is Earth the only one with life?
