Plate Tectonics — the ground is moving
The ground under your feet feels like the definition of solid and permanent — but it isn't. Earth's rocky shell is cracked into giant pieces called plates that float on hotter, softer rock below and slowly move, carrying whole continents with them. Where they meet, they build mountains, open oceans, and unleash earthquakes and volcanoes. The San Andreas Fault is one such seam, where two plates grind past each other in slow motion.
The Climate System — the crisis, explained
Climate is not the same as weather. Weather is what the sky does today; climate is the long-term average — the settings the whole system runs on. Those settings are now changing fast, and the science of why is settled and surprisingly simple: certain gases in the air trap heat, we are adding a lot of them, and the planet is warming as a result. This is the defining problem of your lifetime, so it is worth understanding properly rather than as a slogan.
The Ocean Engine — the planet's life-support
The ocean isn't just a big pool of water on the side of the land — it runs the planet. It stores and moves vast amounts of heat, soaks up much of our carbon, makes about half the oxygen you breathe, and drives the weather and climate everywhere, including far inland. That vivid coral reef is the tip of a system so large and so deep that we have mapped the surface of Mars in more detail than our own seafloor.
The Atmosphere — a fragile shell of air
From space, the most striking thing about Earth is that thin, glowing blue line at its edge — the whole atmosphere, the entire ocean of air we live in, seen sideways. It looks impossibly delicate against the black, and it is. That shell, proportionally thinner than the skin of an apple, is the only thing between you and the freezing, airless vacuum of space, and it does an astonishing number of jobs at once.
Deep Time — reading Earth's diary in rock
The hardest thing to grasp about Earth is not how big it is, but how OLD it is. The planet is about 4.5 billion years old — a span so vast that the human mind simply can't feel it. Yet Earth keeps a diary, and you can read it: the layered walls of the Grand Canyon are pages of rock stacked in order, the oldest at the bottom, recording nearly two billion years of history one thin band at a time.
Storms & Extreme Weather — the atmosphere at full power
A hurricane seen from space is one of the most beautiful and terrifying sights on Earth: a vast spiral of cloud hundreds of kilometres wide, wrapped around a calm eye. It is the atmosphere unleashed — the same air and water that make a gentle breeze, concentrated into a machine that can release more energy than all the power plants on the planet. And these machines are being tuned by a warming climate.
