Light in a thread — Glassmakers · The Makers
In the Glasshouse of Embergate, Master Rowan holds up a bundle of glass threads, thinner than hair, with a glowing tip. Makers · MyLeoNes.
Your task
Is each sentence about glass fibres true or false?
- An optical fibre is a strand of very pure glass about as thin as a hair. Light entering one end bounces off the inside wall again and again, so it travels along the fibre, even round bends, and comes out the other end. Pulses of light carry messages.
- Invented guild stories to learn from. Never try fire, hot metal, glass, blades or power tools on your own: crafts like these are learned with a trained adult.
- Every craft came from many people in many places. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Craft knowledge — You understood how this craft works.
- Making it well — You put the steps in a sensible order and used the right tools.
- Care for people & planet — You kept people safe and used materials wisely.
In real life
Glass fibres in cables under the sea carry most of the internet between continents. Doctors also use thin glass fibres in endoscopes to look inside the body without a big cut.
Glassmakers
The guild stories are invented, to learn from. Fire, heat, blades and tools are only for trained adults: learn these crafts with a trained adult, never at home. Nothing about you is collected; progress stays on this device.
