Glass that floats — Glassmakers · The Makers
Glazier Nadia is fitting a long window pane at the Embergate library. Dr. Amara asks how glass can be so flat and smooth, with no ripples at all.
Your task
Put the steps of making flat window glass in order.
- Most windows are made by the float process, shown by Alastair Pilkington in England in the 1950s. Molten glass is poured onto a bath of molten tin. Glass is lighter than tin, so it floats and spreads out perfectly flat, and gravity smooths both faces.
- Invented guild stories to learn from. Never try fire, hot metal, glass, blades or power tools on your own: crafts like these are learned with a trained adult.
- Every craft came from many people in many places. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Craft knowledge — You understood how this craft works.
- Making it well — You put the steps in a sensible order and used the right tools.
- Care for people & planet — You kept people safe and used materials wisely.
In real life
Before float glass, flat glass had to be ground and polished, which was slow and costly. Today float factories add lots of recycled glass to the mix, which saves raw material and energy.
Glassmakers
The guild stories are invented, to learn from. Fire, heat, blades and tools are only for trained adults: learn these crafts with a trained adult, never at home. Nothing about you is collected; progress stays on this device.
