A beam's second life — Carpenters · The Makers
The old barn at the edge of Alderbrook is being taken down by trained adults. One big oak beam, about 150 years old, is set aside for the school.
Your task
Pick the wisest answer at each step.
- Reclaimed timber is wood taken from an old building and used again. Beams from slow-grown old trees are often dense and tight-grained, and the carbon the tree stored stays locked in as long as the wood is used.
- Invented guild stories to learn from. Never try fire, hot metal, glass, blades or power tools on your own: crafts like these are learned with a trained adult.
- Every craft came from many people in many places. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Craft knowledge — You understood how this craft works.
- Making it well — You put the steps in a sensible order and used the right tools.
- Care for people & planet — You kept people safe and used materials wisely.
In real life
Taking a building apart carefully, instead of knocking it down, is called deconstruction. It keeps good beams and bricks out of landfill, and some towns now ask builders to do it.
Carpenters
The guild stories are invented, to learn from. Fire, heat, blades and tools are only for trained adults: learn these crafts with a trained adult, never at home. Nothing about you is collected; progress stays on this device.
