Patience: drying the wood — Carpenters · The Makers
Fresh wood is full of water. Old carpenter Gaspar explains how the Alderbrook yard turns a wet log into planks that will not twist.
Your task
Put the steps in order, from tree to ready plank.
- As wood dries it shrinks. If it dries too fast or unevenly it can crack, twist or bend. Slow, airy drying is called seasoning.
- Invented guild stories to learn from. Never try fire, hot metal, glass, blades or power tools on your own: crafts like these are learned with a trained adult.
- Every craft came from many people in many places. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Craft knowledge — You understood how this craft works.
- Making it well — You put the steps in a sensible order and used the right tools.
- Care for people & planet — You kept people safe and used materials wisely.
In real life
A common old rule of thumb was about one year of air drying for every 2.5 cm of plank thickness. Today many yards also use drying kilns, run by trained staff.

The guild stories are invented, to learn from. Fire, heat, blades and tools are only for trained adults: learn these crafts with a trained adult, never at home. Nothing about you is collected; progress stays on this device.
