Layers that never warp — Carpenters · The Makers
Old Gaspar shows the Alderbrook apprentices a sheet of plywood and a plain plank. The plank has bent in the damp, but the plywood is flat. Why?
Your task
Put the steps of making plywood in order.
- Wood is strong along the grain, but it swells and shrinks mostly across it. In plywood each thin layer has its grain at a right angle to the next, so the layers hold each other still. There is usually an odd number of layers, so the board stays balanced.
- Invented guild stories to learn from. Never try fire, hot metal, glass, blades or power tools on your own: crafts like these are learned with a trained adult.
- Every craft came from many people in many places. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Craft knowledge — You understood how this craft works.
- Making it well — You put the steps in a sensible order and used the right tools.
- Care for people & planet — You kept people safe and used materials wisely.
In real life
Builders now use the same crossed-layer trick on a giant scale. Cross-laminated timber is made of whole planks glued in crossed layers into panels big enough for walls and floors of tall buildings.
Carpenters
The guild stories are invented, to learn from. Fire, heat, blades and tools are only for trained adults: learn these crafts with a trained adult, never at home. Nothing about you is collected; progress stays on this device.
