Food helps the body work — Science, 4–6 years
Food gives the body materials and energy for growing, moving and repairing itself. Different foods do different jobs, so one food cannot provide everything the body needs.
Food is body fuel and building material
Your body uses food in more than one way. It gets energy to walk, play and keep warm, and it gets materials to grow and mend small injuries. This is why eating is not just about filling your tummy: food supports many jobs inside the body.
Why do we need different foods?
People noticed that bodies need food even when nobody is running, because growing and staying warm continue all day. They also saw that eating only one kind of food does not keep a body well for long. Asking what different foods do helps us choose a varied meal for several body jobs.
A meal with different jobs
Imagine lunch with bread, an egg, carrot sticks and an apple. Step 1: the bread gives energy for walking; step 2: the egg provides materials the body can use for growth and repair; step 3: the fruit and vegetables add other useful substances. Together, the meal does more jobs than one food alone.
More is not always better
It is tempting to think that one food giving energy must be all the body needs, especially when it makes you feel full. That idea makes sense for one job, but bodies have several jobs. A varied meal matters because energy alone is not the same as all the materials and substances the body uses.
Planning a varied plate
At home, a family can look at a plate and ask whether it includes different kinds of food, such as fruit or vegetables, a starchy food and something that helps build the body. This is not about making every meal perfect. It is a practical way to give the body a range of useful materials over time.
