Every point gets an address
A coordinate plane is a flat grid with a horizontal axis and a vertical axis. A point is named by saying how far to move sideways first, then how far to move up or down: (x, y). The crossing point, (0, 0), is the origin.
Why use two numbers?
Saying “near the tree” is useful only when there is one tree and everyone can see it. Maps, plans and graphs need a precise way to describe a place, even when people are far away or the picture changes. Two directions give that precision: one along the grid and one across it.
Finding a point
Place the point (−2, 3). Start at the origin, (0, 0). The first number is −2, so move two squares left. The second number is 3, so move three squares up. The point is now in the upper-left part of the grid, exactly where the two moves meet.
Swapping the order
A common mistake is reading (2, 5) as five steps sideways and two steps up. That feels reasonable because both numbers describe movement and the pair looks symmetrical. But the agreed order matters: x comes first for the horizontal move, and y comes second for the vertical move.
Where it appears
A digital map uses coordinates to place a shop, a bus stop or a photograph at a precise location. Computer games use the same idea to tell a character where to move on the screen. Scientists and designers also use grids to record positions without relying on a sketch or a spoken description.
