Some containers hold more
Capacity is about how much a container can hold before it is full. A tall, thin cup may hold less than a short, wide bowl, so height alone does not tell us. We can compare containers by filling them with the same small cup and counting the pours.
Why compare capacity?
When people pour water, juice, paint, or soup, they need to know whether it will fit and which container holds more. Looking at a container can mislead us because its shape changes what we see. Comparing with one same-sized cup gives a fair answer and avoids spills.
Testing two cups
Take a mug and a bowl, plus one small cup. Fill the mug using the small cup: it takes 4 full cups. Empty it, then fill the bowl: it takes 6 full cups. The bowl has greater capacity because it holds two more of the same cups when both start empty.
Tall does not always mean more
A tall glass often looks as if it must hold more than a wide, low bowl. That is reasonable because the water level rises higher in the glass and catches our eyes. But width matters too: the bowl may hold more overall. Use the same small cup to test instead of trusting the shape.
Filling real containers
Capacity matters when you choose a bottle for a drink, fill a watering can, or decide whether soup will fit in a pan. A measuring jug gives a shared way to say how much is inside, often in litres or millilitres. For small children, pouring with a safe cup is a useful first comparison.
