Portuguese Year 1: Speaking in turn and saying what I think
Portuguese, Year 1 (Portugal): Ask for the floor, wait your turn, speak clearly and say what you think or feel, with a reason.
One at a time
In a conversation, one person speaks at a time. To speak, you raise your finger and wait until you are given the floor. When you speak, you look at the others, say whole words, in a clear voice, not too fast and not too slow. And you can say what you think and how you feel: «Eu acho que…» (I think that…), «Sinto-me… porque…» (I feel… because…).
If everyone talks, nobody hears
When many people talk at once, nobody understands anything and some never get to say what they wanted. Waiting your turn gives everyone the same time. And giving your reason helps the others understand you: «Gosto do verde» (I like green) says one thing, but «Gosto do verde porque é a cor das árvores» (I like green because it is the colour of trees) says more. An opinion is not right or wrong: it is what you think.
Which game shall we play?
The class chooses a game for break. Step 1: Marta raises her finger. Step 2: she waits until the teacher gives her the floor. Step 3: she looks at her classmates and speaks slowly, in a clear voice, with whole words. Step 4: she gives her opinion and a reason: «Eu quero jogar às escondidas porque podemos jogar todos.» (I want to play hide-and-seek because we can all play.) Step 5: she says how she feels: «Fico contente quando jogo com os amigos.» (I feel happy when I play with my friends.)
Talking over the others
You have an idea and are afraid of forgetting it, so you speak at once, or shout louder than the others. But then nobody hears anybody, not even you. Do this instead: raise your finger, repeat the idea quietly to yourself so that you do not lose it, and wait for your turn. When it comes, you will say it better. If you are the one listening, look at the person speaking and do not interrupt.
Where you speak like this
In class, when you answer a question. At the family table, when each person tells about their day. With friends, when you choose a game together. On the phone, when you wait for the other person to finish. Everywhere, waiting your turn and saying «porque…» (because…) helps the others to hear you.
