Food and water give the body what it needs — Health, 4–6 years

Our bodies need water and different kinds of food to move, grow, think and repair themselves. No single food does every job, so variety matters more than choosing one “perfect” food.

Different foods, different jobs

Food is fuel and building material for the body, but different foods bring different useful things. Fruit and vegetables provide fibre and many vitamins, while foods such as bread, rice or potatoes give energy. Water helps the body work and is our usual drink.

Why choose variety?

The problem is that one favourite food cannot supply everything the body needs. Eating only sweets may give quick energy, but it does not provide all the materials for strong bodies, and too much sugar can harm teeth. Offering different foods gives the body more chances to get what it needs.

Making a varied plate

At lunch, Ana has a slice of bread, yoghurt, cucumber and a pear, plus water. The bread gives energy, the yoghurt provides protein and calcium, and the fruit and cucumber add fibre and other useful nutrients. The meal is not magic or perfect; it simply combines different kinds of food.

One food must be best

A reasonable mistake is thinking that one “healthy” food should be eaten all the time. A food can be useful without doing every job, just as one tool cannot fix everything. Variety is not about banning favourite foods; it is about making room for other foods too.

Food and water in a day

We meet this idea at breakfast, lunch, picnics and family meals. Water is useful when we are thirsty, have been active or the day is warm; adults can help decide when a drink is needed. Families may choose different foods, but variety and enough water matter everywhere.
