Ecological niches: how species share resources — Biology, 14–17

A species’ niche is the way it uses conditions and resources to survive and reproduce. Two species can live in the same place when their niches differ, but strong overlap can lead to competition.

More than an address

An ecological niche is not simply the place where a species lives. It includes what it eats, when it is active, the temperature and moisture it tolerates, and how it interacts with other organisms. You can think of it as the species’ way of making a living.

Why competition is not everywhere

If two species require exactly the same limited resource in the same way, each reduces what is available to the other. But differences in feeding height, timing or habitat can reduce that overlap. Niche ideas explain how similar species can coexist instead of one always driving the other away.

Two warblers, one tree

Imagine two bird species feeding in the same oak. Species A searches for caterpillars near the outer branches during the day; species B searches nearer the trunk and is most active at dawn. Their habitat overlaps, but their feeding time and position differ, so competition for each caterpillar is reduced.

Niche is not the same as habitat

It is reasonable to use habitat and niche as if they meant the same thing, because both concern where an organism is found. Habitat is closer to an address; niche includes the organism’s role and requirements. Two species may share an address while occupying different niches.

Restoring a living community

Ecologists use niche information when restoring wetlands, forests or urban habitats. Planting a species is not enough: you need the right light, soil, water, pollinators and food relationships. If one requirement is missing, the species may survive briefly but fail to form a stable population.
