Your ears turn vibrations in the air into messages your brain can understand. Loud sound can damage this delicate system, so listening habits matter.

Sound becomes a message

Sound is made by vibrations moving through air. The outer ear collects them, the eardrum vibrates, and tiny bones pass the movement deeper inside. The inner ear changes it into nerve signals, which travel to the brain as the sounds you recognise.

Why protect hearing?

Hearing lets you understand speech, enjoy music and notice warnings such as a bicycle bell. The sound-sensing cells in the inner ear are delicate and may be harmed by very loud or long-lasting noise. Protecting them helps keep sounds clear in the future.

Choosing a safer volume

1. You use headphones on a bus. 2. At full volume, the music is so loud that nearby people can hear it and your ears feel uncomfortable. 3. You lower the volume until it is comfortable and take regular quiet breaks. 4. If you still cannot hear someone speaking, move away from the noise or ask an adult for help.

“It does not hurt, so it is safe”

This seems reasonable because pain is a useful warning for many injuries. But loud sound can harm hearing cells without causing immediate pain, and the effect may build over time. Ringing ears or muffled hearing after noise is a sign to leave the noise and tell an adult.

Caring for ears in real life

Hearing safety matters at concerts, fireworks, sports events, near machinery and when using headphones. Ear defenders or earplugs can reduce sound, while distance and quiet breaks reduce how much noise reaches the ears. Do not put objects or cotton buds deep into the ear canal.
