From wind to wires

Wind carries energy because moving air can push things. The blades of a turbine catch some of that push and turn a shaft. Inside the machine, a generator uses the spinning shaft to make electricity, which can then travel through wires to places that need it.

Why use wind

People need electricity for lights, machines and communication, but making it can use fuel that becomes smaller in supply or adds pollution. Wind offers a moving source that is naturally replaced. Engineers must still choose a windy place and plan for calm days, because a turbine cannot make much electricity without enough wind.

A small turbine experiment

Make a paper rotor with four blades and attach it to a small motor. Point a fan at it. The air pushes the blades, the blades turn the motor’s shaft, and the motor can act as a generator. Connect a tiny lamp or meter: when the rotor spins faster, the meter usually shows a larger electrical output.

A turbine is not a giant fan

It is easy to think the blades use electricity to make the wind, because household fans look similar. A wind turbine works in the opposite direction: wind turns its blades, and the machine makes electricity. The blades are shaped to catch moving air efficiently, not simply to push air around.

Wind power around us

Large wind turbines stand in windy fields and at sea, where many machines can work together to supply a power network. Small turbines can charge batteries or power equipment in remote places. The same idea appears in old windmills, which used turning blades to grind grain or pump water instead of making electricity.
