Earth’s moving plates — Earth science, 7–10 years
Earth’s hard outer surface is broken into huge pieces that move very slowly. Their movement helps explain why continents change position and why some places have many earthquakes or volcanoes.
What are tectonic plates?
Imagine Earth’s outer shell as a giant cracked eggshell, but with pieces far larger than any country. These pieces, called tectonic plates, slowly slide, spread apart, or push together. They move only a few centimetres a year, about as fast as your fingernails grow.
Why do we need this idea?
People once saw that the edges of continents seemed to fit, but they did not know how continents could move. The plate idea solved that puzzle: continents ride on plates, like stickers carried by slow-moving boards. It also links many earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, and ocean floors to one larger pattern.
A plate’s journey
Suppose two plates move apart by 3 centimetres each year. After 10 years, the gap grows by 3 × 10 = 30 centimetres; after 100 years, it grows by 3 metres. That is tiny in a lifetime, but in 10 million years it would be 300 kilometres, enough to change an ocean greatly.
The common mix-up
A reasonable guess is that whole continents plough through the solid ocean floor like boats through water. They do not. Continents are attached to plates, and the plates include both continental rock and ocean-floor rock, so the whole rigid piece moves together.
Why this matters outside school
Scientists map plate boundaries to learn where earthquakes and volcanoes are more likely. Engineers and emergency planners use those maps when designing buildings, roads, and warning plans. The maps cannot tell the exact day of an earthquake, but they can show which places need stronger preparation.
