Why the Moon changes shape — Earth science, 7–10 years

The Moon does not make its own light, and its round shape does not really change. As it travels around Earth, we see different parts of its sunlit half.

Moon phases

The Sun always lights up half of the Moon, just as a lamp lights half of a ball. From Earth, we see different amounts of that bright half as the Moon orbits us. These changing views are called phases, such as new Moon, crescent, half Moon, and full Moon.

Why did people track them?

Before clocks and printed calendars, the Moon gave people a repeating sky pattern. Counting its phases helped communities organise months, journeys, festivals, and work near the coast. The problem was not that the Moon needed names; people needed a dependable way to notice the passage of time.

Following one lunar month

Look at the Moon on the first evening and draw its shape. About seven days later, it is usually near first quarter, with half its visible face bright. About seven days after that comes the full Moon, then about seven more days bring the last quarter. The complete pattern takes about 29.5 days.

The shadow mistake

It is easy to think that Earth’s shadow covers the Moon every night, because the Moon seems to lose a piece of itself. Normally that is not happening: the bright part is simply facing away from us. Earth’s shadow reaches the Moon only during a lunar eclipse, which is a special event.

A sky calendar

People still use Moon phases to plan some night observations, outdoor events, and visits to places where tides matter. A full Moon makes the night sky brighter, while a new Moon leaves more stars visible. The phase tells us about the Moon’s position, but it does not predict every tide or every night’s weather.
