Repeated results can give us an estimate of how likely an event is. Data, 7–10 years.
Results can suggest chance
When we repeat the same fair test, the results often settle into a pattern. If a coloured spinner lands on blue about half the time, blue seems fairly likely. Data from trials can estimate chance, but a small number of trials may still look uneven.
Why repeat a trial?
One roll of a die cannot tell us much about its usual results. A six might appear immediately, even though each face has the same chance on a fair die. Repeating the roll gives more evidence, so unusual short-term luck has less power to fool us.
Estimating a spinner’s chance
A spinner is used 20 times and lands on green 13 times. The experimental fraction is 13 out of 20, or 65%. We can say green appeared about 65% of the time in this test. That is an estimate, not a promise that the next spin will be green.
Chance does not keep score
After four red results, someone may think blue is now due. That feels reasonable because we expect balance, but random trials do not remember earlier results. If the spinner is fair, the chance of blue on the next spin stays the same as before.
Chance in everyday decisions
Weather forecasts use many observations to estimate the chance of rain. A forecast saying 70% does not mean rain will fall for 70% of the day; it describes how often similar conditions led to rain. Data helps us plan, while still leaving room for uncertainty.
