Where does the matter go? — Chemistry, 7–10 years

When substances change, the matter does not simply vanish. This idea helps us account for what goes in and what comes out, even when a gas is hard to see.

Matter is accounted for

A change can make a solid disappear, produce bubbles or leave ash, but the matter has not vanished. It may have changed form or moved into the air. If we collect everything before and after, the total mass is the same.

Why weigh both sides?

People once thought that burning made some matter disappear because the ash weighed less than the wood. The missing part had joined the air as gases. We compare closed containers so the air cannot quietly escape and hide the answer.

A sealed-bag example

Put 10 g of vinegar and 5 g of bicarbonate in a sealed bag without mixing them. The whole bag weighs 15 g. Tip the bag so they react and bubbles fill it; the bag still weighs 15 g, because the gas is inside. Nothing was lost.

The gas seems to vanish

A common mistake is to say that an open reaction loses mass because the balance reading goes down. That is a reasonable thought: we can see the solid and liquid, but not the gas leaving. The better conclusion is that matter escaped into the room, not that it vanished.

Recipes and factories

Cooks and engineers need to know where ingredients go. A recipe balances amounts so there is not too much waste, and a factory checks that its starting materials can account for its products and gases. The same habit helps track pollution released into air or water.
