Phases of the Moon — Astronomy, 7–10 years

The Moon does not change shape from week to week. We see different amounts of its sunlit half as the Moon travels around Earth.

Seeing the lit half

The Moon shines because sunlight bounces off it; it makes no light of its own. At every moment, half of the Moon is lit by the Sun. From Earth, we see different portions of that bright half, making the Moon look full, half-lit, or like a thin curve.

Why does the Moon seem to change?

People needed a way to track time before clocks and calendars were common. The Moon's repeating pattern is easy to notice and takes about a month. Understanding the pattern solves the puzzle of why a bright full Moon slowly becomes a crescent, then grows again.

Following one Moon cycle

Imagine the Sun on your left and watch the Moon move around Earth. When the Moon is between Earth and the Sun, its bright side faces away: we see a new Moon. About one week later, we see half; after another week, the whole near side is bright: full Moon. Then the lit part shrinks.

It is not Earth's shadow

A reasonable guess is that Earth's shadow covers more or less of the Moon each month. The Moon's changing shape makes that idea tempting. But most phases happen when the Moon, Earth, and Sun are not lined up: we are simply seeing different parts of the Moon's sunlit half. Earth's shadow causes a lunar eclipse only sometimes.

Reading the Moon

Moon phases help people choose times for night walks, observations, and outdoor work. A full Moon makes the night sky brighter, while a thin Moon may be easier to see near sunset or sunrise. Astronomers use the phase to plan which lunar features will be lit best.
