Food and water give the body usable energy — Wellbeing, 7–10 years

The body needs fuel and water to think, grow, move and recover. A wellbeing choice is noticing what you need and choosing a varied amount, without labelling foods as good or bad.

Fuel, water and variety

Food supplies materials and energy, while water helps blood, cells and body temperature work properly. Different foods bring different useful things, so variety matters more than finding one perfect food. Hunger, thirst and fullness are clues, not rules that need to be obeyed exactly.

Why regular fuel helps

Your body uses energy all the time, even while sitting still: the heart beats, the brain works and cells repair themselves. Going for a long time without food or water can make thinking and playing harder for some people. Regular chances to eat and drink solve that practical problem, while needs differ from person to person.

Planning an active afternoon

Marta has football at 16:00 and notices she is hungry at 15:15. First, she drinks some water. Then she chooses a snack such as yoghurt and a banana, which are easy to eat before activity. After football, she checks whether she is thirsty or hungry again and has a normal meal rather than trying to ignore the clues.

The “good” and “bad” food trap

A tempting mistake is to call one food good and another bad, then feel guilty for eating the second. The shortcut seems useful because simple labels are easy to remember, but bodies need variety and enjoyment too. A better question is: what does my body need now, and what choices are available?

Fuel for real days

This idea helps when packing a school bag, choosing a picnic, walking in hot weather or preparing for sport. A water bottle and a varied snack can make a long day more comfortable, but they are not magic solutions. Weather, activity, allergies and medical needs can change what is sensible.
