Earth turns around an invisible line through its poles. As it turns, different places face the Sun and then turn away, making a regular pattern of day and night.
Earth turns like a ball
Earth spins around its axis, an imaginary line from the North Pole to the South Pole. A place facing the Sun has daylight because sunlight reaches it. As Earth turns, that place faces away from the Sun and has night. Earth keeps turning, so the pattern repeats.
Why day and night happen
People once saw the Sun move across the sky and could reasonably imagine that the Sun travelled around a still Earth. The rotation idea solves a different problem: it explains why the Sun seems to move while Earth turns. It also explains why day happens at different times in different places.
A globe and a lamp
Put a sticker on a globe and point a lamp at it. When the sticker faces the lamp, it is daytime there. Turn the globe a quarter turn: the sticker moves towards the edge between light and darkness, like sunrise or sunset. Turn it another half turn: it faces away, so it is night.
The Sun does not go around us each day
It is natural to say that the Sun rises and travels across the sky because that is exactly how it looks from the ground. The everyday words are useful, but they can hide the cause. The apparent journey happens mainly because Earth rotates, carrying our side towards the Sun and then away from it.
Day and night in daily life
Day and night help people organise sleep, school, work and travel. Clocks and calendars are built around repeating patterns caused by Earth’s rotation and orbit. A globe model explains the pattern, but it does not predict every detail of daylight, because seasons and Earth’s tilt also matter.
