Solids and liquids — Physical education, 4–6 years

Some materials keep their own shape, while others flow and take the shape of their container. Pouring and holding objects makes this difference easy to see.

Keeping shape or flowing

A solid, such as a block or spoon, keeps its shape when you put it down. A liquid, such as water, flows and takes the shape of the cup, bowl or bottle holding it. The amount can stay the same even when the shape changes.

Why this difference helps

People needed to know which materials could be held, stacked or built with, and which could be poured or stored in a container. This difference helps us choose a cup for juice, a box for blocks and a towel for a spill. It turns a simple observation into a useful choice.

The same water, two shapes

Pour half a cup of water into a wide bowl. It spreads across the bottom. Pour it into a tall glass: it becomes a narrow, taller shape, but it is still half a cup of water. The container changed the water’s shape, not the amount.

A liquid has not vanished

A thin layer of water can look like less water than a deep layer. That is a reasonable mistake because our eyes often use height to judge how much there is. Pour the water into the same measuring cup, and you can check whether the amount really changed.

Choosing the right container

We use solid objects to build towers, hold books and make furniture. We use liquids in bottles, cups, baths and watering cans because they can flow into the space provided. Cooks, gardeners and cleaners all choose containers according to how a material behaves.
