Portuguese Year 4: One or many, big or small: number and degree

Portuguese, Year 4 (Portugal): How nouns and adjectives change to be plural (animal → animais) and to show degree (casinha, mais alto, altíssimo).

Singular and plural

Number and degree are two more things that change in nouns and adjectives. Number: one (singular) or many (plural). Almost always you add -s: casa → casas. But there are other rules: -l becomes -is (animal → animais); -r and -z add -es (flor → flores, luz → luzes); -m becomes -ns (homem → homens); -ão makes -ões, -ães or -ãos (leão → leões, pão → pães, mão → mãos).

Degree says «how much»

Degree tells how much: size or intensity. In nouns: diminutive (casa → casinha, pão → pãozinho) and augmentative (casa → casarão). In adjectives: comparative (mais alto do que, tão alto como, menos alto do que) and superlative (o mais alto da turma; altíssimo, which means «muito alto»). We use it to compare things and to say more with fewer words.

What happens to «o gato pequeno»

See what happens to «o gato pequeno» (the small cat). Step 1: plural: «os gatos pequenos»; the -s goes on the article, the noun and the adjective. Step 2: diminutive of the noun: «o gatinho». Step 3: comparative: «O gato é mais pequeno do que o cão.» (The cat is smaller than the dog.) Step 4: superlative in one word: «pequeníssimo».

«Mais bom» and other traps

Two traps. 1) Some adjectives have their own comparative: bom → melhor, mau → pior, grande → maior. We do not say «mais bom» ✗ or «mais melhor» ✗. 2) The plural of words in -ão is not always -ões: it is mãos (not «mões») and pães (not «pãos»). When in doubt, think of a similar word or check the dictionary.

Shops, sport and comparisons

You use number and degree all the time: «dois gatinhos» (two kittens), «o melhor jogador» (the best player), «uma casa grandíssima» (a very big house). In comparisons, every day: «Esta mochila é mais leve do que aquela.» (This bag is lighter than that one.) Knowing these forms helps you speak and write with more precision.
