Portuguese Year 1: Listening and saying what you feel

Portuguese, Year 1 (Portugal): After a story, a poem or a folk song, say what you understood, what you felt and whether you liked it, and why.

Listen, then say what you feel

When you hear a story, a poem or a song your grandparents know, your head makes a little film and your heart feels things. You are happy, scared, sorry, or you want to laugh. All of that counts! You can say what you understood, what you felt and whether you liked it. Listening with care comes first.

Why say it out loud?

If you keep what you feel to yourself, nobody knows what you think. When you say “I liked it because…”, you show you listened, and you help others hear the story in a new way. Two children can feel different things about the same story, and neither is wrong. Saying it also makes you curious: you want to hear it again or ask more.

A case: the lost balloon

Listen: «A Rita perdeu o balão vermelho e ficou triste. Um menino deu-lhe o balão azul dele. A Rita sorriu.» (Rita lost her red balloon and was sad. A boy gave her his blue one. Rita smiled.) Step 1: what happened? Rita lost her balloon and a boy helped. Step 2: how did Rita feel? Sad, then happy. Step 3: what did you feel? “I felt sorry for her.” Step 4: did you like it? “I liked it because the boy was kind.”

Only “I liked it”?

Many children say only “I liked it” or “I didn't like it” and stop there. The reason is missing! Another mistake is to think there is one right answer. There isn't: everyone feels in their own way. But what you say must be about the text you heard. Use “because” and point to a part of the story.

Where you do this

You do it at home when a grandparent tells a story, when you hear a rhyme or a song the older ones know by heart, and when you watch a film and tell a friend what you thought. Every time you say “I liked it because…”, you are doing exactly what this topic is about.

Test what you learned

  1. You heard a story. Which sentence says how you felt?

    • a) O texto tem três frases.
    • b) Senti medo quando o lobo apareceu.
    • c) O lobo tem quatro patas.

Correct answer: b) Senti medo quando o lobo apareceu. — Yes: “I felt scared” says a feeling and the moment that caused it.

  2. You heard: «O Pedro caiu e chorou. A Ana deu-lhe a mão.» Which answer gives an opinion with a reason?

    • a) Gostei porque a Ana foi boa amiga.
    • b) Gostei.
    • c) O Pedro caiu.

Correct answer: a) Gostei porque a Ana foi boa amiga. — Right: “I liked it” is the opinion and “because Ana was a good friend” is the reason, taken from the story.

  3. Marta says: «Gostei da história.» What is missing?

    • a) Nothing, that is enough
    • b) The teacher's opinion
    • c) The reason: «gostei porque…»

Correct answer: c) The reason: «gostei porque…» — Yes. “I liked it” is the opinion; “because…” tells which part made her like it.
