English, Year 3 (Portugal): Learn picture words in groups, read short sentences with them, and practise writing: order letters and words, label pictures, fill gaps.
Words in families
Learn words in groups, with a picture for each. Colours: red, blue, green. Clothes: hat, skirt, shoes. Pets: cat, dog, fish. Weather: sunny, rainy, windy. The same works for family (mum, dad), school (book, pencil) and transport (bus, train). Then use them in short sentences: “It's a cat.” “It's sunny.”
Pictures help you read
A picture lets you understand a new word without translating it. You see a fish, you read “fish”: the word and the thing meet in your head. Then you can read short sentences made of words you know: “It's a red hat.” “I've got a dog.” Look at the picture first, read the sentence, then check that they match.
Writing tasks: letters, words, gaps
Task 1: order the letters o-g-d under a picture of a dog and write “dog”. Task 2: order the words hat / a / It's / red: start with “It's”, then “a”, then the colour before the thing: “It's a red hat.” Task 3: fill the gap with a given word: “It's ___ today.” (sunny / red). The picture shows the sun: “It's sunny today.” Finish by copying the sentence neatly.
The colour goes first
Careful with the order! In Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian the colour comes after the thing. In English it comes before: “a red hat”, never “a hat red”. And the colour never changes: “a red hat”, “red hats”. Say it in your head first: colour, then thing.
Where you will use it
You use picture words in English games and apps, on the labels of toys and food, and to talk about your things: “My bag is blue.” “I've got a rabbit.” At school you label pictures and complete sentences. Make a picture dictionary: draw a thing and write its English word under it.
