Some gases in the atmosphere slow the escape of heat from Earth. This natural greenhouse effect keeps our planet warmer than it would be without those gases.

A warm layer around Earth

Sunlight passes through the atmosphere and warms land, oceans and air. The warm Earth sends energy back upwards as heat, and some gases absorb part of it and send some back down. This is a natural warming system, not a solid roof.

Why this effect matters

Without the natural greenhouse effect, Earth’s average surface temperature would be about 18 degrees below zero, rather than about 15 degrees above zero. Liquid water and many forms of life would be much harder to support. Scientists found the explanation by studying heat, gases and the way atmospheres hold energy.

Comparing Earth with no greenhouse effect

Scientists estimate Earth’s average surface temperature at about 15°C today. They calculate that without its natural greenhouse gases it would be about −18°C. Step 1: compare the numbers. Step 2: move from −18 to 15 on a number line. The difference is 33°C, showing how much natural warming matters.

Not every greenhouse effect is bad

A common mistake is to hear greenhouse effect and think it means only harmful pollution. That is understandable because extra greenhouse gases are causing extra warming, but the natural effect is essential for a liveable Earth. The important question is how much warming the atmosphere provides.

Understanding a changing climate

The greenhouse effect helps scientists understand why changes in atmospheric gases can change Earth’s temperature. It is used when studying climate, energy choices and long-term changes in ice, oceans and living things. A warm jacket is a useful comparison for the idea of slowing heat loss, but it is not the same process.
