Safety is part of the design
A safe design thinks ahead about what could go wrong and makes that less likely. It may use a rounded edge, a handle that stays cool, or a lid that closes firmly. Safety is not an extra sticker added at the end; it is built into the object from the beginning.
The problem safety solves
People made tools to do jobs faster, but sharp, hot, heavy or moving parts can hurt someone. Designers therefore look for dangers before an object is used and add ways to control them. A pair of scissors, for example, needs sharp blades for cutting but blunt, covered tips for carrying.
Example: a safer pencil sharpener
A class designs a pencil sharpener for a desk. First, they spot two dangers: the blade is sharp and the shavings can spill. Next, they put the blade inside a case, add a screw so it cannot come loose, and attach a small container. Finally, they check that the sharpener works without touching the blade.
The safety mistake
A common mistake is to remove every sharp, hot or moving part, even when the object needs it to work. This seems sensible because danger feels bad, but it can create a useless object. The better question is: what job must the part do, and how can its danger be contained or kept away from hands?
Safety outside school
Safety design appears in bike helmets, child seats, kitchen tools, plugs and playgrounds. A helmet spreads a hit over a larger area, while a plug cover keeps fingers away from electrical contacts. These designs do not remove every risk, so people still need to use them properly.
