Measure with the same unit — Data, 4–6 years

When we measure objects, the pieces or units must be the same size. Then the numbers tell us something fair about length, height or weight.

A measure needs equal units

To measure a toy’s length, we cover it with equal pieces and count the pieces. The pieces might be cubes, paper clips or centimetres on a ruler. If every piece is the same size and there are no gaps or overlaps, the count tells us the toy’s length.

Why use the same unit?

This solves a problem: two people may measure the same object with different-sized pieces and get different numbers. A shared unit lets their results match and be checked. People developed standard units because building, buying and travelling are difficult when “three steps” means something different to everyone.

Example: a pencil

We want to measure a pencil with cubes. First, we put one cube at an end. Next, we place more cubes in a straight line, touching but not covering one another. Seven cubes reach the other end, so the pencil is 7 cubes long. A ruler might give a different unit, such as 12 centimetres.

The tempting mistake

A common mistake is to leave gaps between the pieces or let one piece cover another. The object may still look covered, so the mistake is easy to miss. Gaps make the answer too large, while overlaps make it too small; starting at the edge and touching each piece helps.

Where it is useful

Measuring helps when we check whether a shelf will fit, choose enough ribbon for a present, or see how much a plant has grown. Cooks measure ingredients, builders measure wood and doctors measure height. The same unit makes instructions useful to people in different places.
