Compare groups of data — Data, 4–6 years
After sorting and counting, we can ask which group has more, fewer or the same number. Comparing helps us answer a question using evidence from what we counted.
More, fewer or the same
To compare groups, look at how many objects each one has. One group can have more, another fewer, or both can have the same number. The words only make sense after the objects have been counted or matched carefully.
Why compare?
Seeing two groups is not always enough: a long row of large objects can look like more than a short row of small ones. Counting or pairing solves the problem of trusting appearances. Then we can give a fair answer about which group has more, fewer or the same.
Which plate has more?
Plate A has four grapes. Plate B has six grapes, spread farther apart. Count A: one, two, three, four. Count B: one, two, three, four, five, six. Six is more than four, so Plate B has more grapes; it has two more.
Longer does not always mean more
A common mistake is choosing the group spread across more space. That is reasonable because our eyes notice length before they count objects. Bring the objects into pairs, or count each group. Equal pairs show “the same”, and an unpaired object shows which group has more.
Comparing in everyday choices
We compare how many cups are needed, which queue has fewer people or which box has more blocks. We also compare votes when a group chooses a game. The comparison must match the question: count people for a queue, not the amount of space they occupy.
