Decomposers: returning nutrients to nature — Biology, 11–13 years
Decomposers break down dead organisms and waste. They do not create energy, but they return useful substances to soil and water, where plants can take them up again.
Nature reuses materials
Bacteria, fungi and small animals called decomposers feed on dead material and waste. They break large substances into smaller ones, releasing minerals and gases. The materials return to the environment instead of staying locked inside one organism forever.
Why decay is essential
If dead leaves and bodies only piled up, useful elements would remain trapped and plants would eventually lack them. Decomposition solves this recycling problem. It also removes dead material, though it does not make pollution harmless or return every substance quickly.
A fallen leaf returns to the soil
1. A leaf falls and contains carbon and mineral nutrients. 2. Fungi and bacteria grow on it and release digestive chemicals. 3. The leaf becomes smaller pieces and then simpler substances. 4. Soil organisms and plants use some released materials, while carbon also returns to the air as carbon dioxide.
Decomposers do not make soil from nothing
A reasonable mistake is to think decomposers simply make dead things disappear. They change matter into other forms, and some material becomes part of the soil, but mass is not destroyed; gases, water and small particles still go somewhere.
Compost and healthy gardens
A compost heap uses the same basic process as a forest floor. Moist plant scraps are broken down by decomposers and become darker, nutrient-rich material that can improve soil. Good compost needs air, suitable moisture and time; plastic does not decompose in the same way.
