A food chain shows who gets energy from whom. It starts with a plant and follows feeding links between living things.
Energy passes along a chain
In a food chain, one living thing is eaten by another. A green plant uses light to make food; a caterpillar eats the plant; a bird eats the caterpillar. The arrows point from the food to the eater, showing where energy moves: plant → caterpillar → bird.
Why draw a food chain?
It is hard to see all the connections in a field, pond or woodland. A food chain makes one route clear and helps us ask what could happen if one part changes. If a dry summer leaves fewer plants, there may be fewer caterpillars and then fewer birds. The chain is a useful model, not a complete picture of nature.
A pond food chain
Imagine a pond with algae, a water flea and a small fish. First, algae use sunlight to make food. Next, the water flea eats the algae, so the arrow is algae → water flea. Finally, the fish eats the water flea, giving algae → water flea → fish. The fish gets energy from food that began with sunlight.
Reading the arrow backwards
A common mistake is to read plant → rabbit → fox as “the plant eats the rabbit”. The arrow is not showing who attacks whom; it shows the direction of energy from food to eater. Since the rabbit eats the plant, the plant comes first. Thinking of the arrow as “is eaten by” can help.
Changing one part of nature
Farmers, gardeners and wildlife workers use food chains to think about consequences. If a pesticide kills many insects, birds that eat those insects may find less food. If too many fish are caught, animals that eat fish may struggle. Real ecosystems have many chains crossing, so a chain gives a warning, not a guaranteed prediction.
