Features that fit a place
An adaptation is an inherited feature that helps a living thing manage in a particular environment. Thick fur can reduce heat loss, and a long beak can help reach food. An adaptation is useful because it suits the surroundings, not because the animal chooses it on purpose.
Why do features fit environments?
People noticed that animals in very different places often had features suited to those places, but needed an explanation for the pattern. Small inherited differences can help some individuals survive and have young; over many generations, those helpful features become more common. This idea connects organisms with their environments.
How a polar bear copes
Consider a polar bear on Arctic ice: 1) a thick layer of body fat slows heat loss; 2) dense fur traps warm air; 3) wide paws spread its weight on snow and help it swim; 4) pale fur makes it harder to notice on ice. Together, these features improve its chances in a cold, snowy habitat.
Animals do not choose new features
It seems sensible to say that a bear grew thick fur because it felt cold and needed it. An individual cannot decide to grow a useful inherited feature for its young. Individuals vary naturally; if a feature helps some survive and reproduce, it may become common in the population over generations.
Adaptations and protecting nature
Naturalists use adaptations to predict what may happen when a species’ surroundings change. If a pond dries up, frogs that need water for eggs face a problem, even if the adults can travel away. Conservation workers protect suitable places because a useful feature only helps when the matching environment remains.
