The idea

Earth is turning all the time, like a slowly spinning ball. The side facing the Sun has daylight, while the side turned away has night. Because we are standing on Earth, the Sun and stars seem to move across the sky, although much of that apparent motion comes from our own planet turning.

Why we need this idea

People needed to explain why the Sun appears in the east, crosses the sky and disappears in the west, and why shadows change during the day. Saying that the whole sky circles Earth once every day seems possible when we watch it. Earth’s rotation gives a simpler explanation and lets us predict sunrise, sunset and the length of a day.

A worked example

Imagine a lamp as the Sun and a globe with a sticker on it. First, point the sticker towards the lamp: it is daytime there. Turn the globe one quarter-turn; the sticker moves towards the edge of the light, like sunset. Turn it another half-turn: it is on the dark side, so it is night. One more quarter-turn brings sunrise.

The common trap

A natural mistake is to say that the Sun travels around a motionless Earth each day. It looks reasonable because the Sun really does change position in our view, and we feel no spinning. The important distinction is between apparent motion and the movement causing it: Earth turns, while the Sun is far away.

Where it is used

This idea helps people organise time: clocks, calendars, work shifts and the timing of broadcasts all depend on Earth’s turning. It also helps astronomers plan when a telescope can see a target. At a basic level, knowing which side of Earth faces the Sun explains why it can be daytime in one country and night in another.
