Three-point perspective — Art, 14–17

Three-point perspective shows objects that rise, fall or tilt dramatically in space. It adds a third vanishing point to the two directions used in more familiar perspective.

The idea

In three-point perspective, vertical edges do not stay parallel: they aim towards a third vanishing point. Use it when you look sharply up at a tower or down from a tall building. The picture can feel dramatic because the viewer is no longer standing at an ordinary eye level.

Why it exists

Two-point perspective works well when you see the sides of a box from a fairly level position, but it struggles with a very tall building viewed from below. Artists needed a way to show that its vertical edges also change direction in the picture. The third point solves that problem, even though it makes every line harder to control.

Try it step by step

Draw a horizon at y = 300 on a 600-pixel canvas. Put left and right vanishing points at x = −400 and x = 1000, then place the third point at (300, 1100), below the canvas. Mark a top corner at (250, 180) and connect it to all three points. Choose nearby points for the other corners; the lines now make a tall block that seems to rise above you.

The tempting mistake

A common mistake is keeping every vertical edge perfectly upright, because buildings are usually drawn that way in diagrams. That is reasonable: in ordinary street views, the third point may be extremely far away, so the convergence is almost invisible. Check the viewpoint first; only pull verticals towards a third point when the camera looks strongly up or down.

Where it appears

You see three-point perspective in comic panels of skyscrapers, dramatic film storyboards and game environments viewed from unusual angles. Architects may use it to communicate a striking viewpoint, while a technical plan usually avoids such distortion. If the scene is meant to feel ordinary, this tool may be too strong.
