The extra day — Watchmakers · The Makers
Every four years the guild clock-face shows a date that other years skip: 29 February. Apprentice Joss asks why. Which sentences are true?
Your task
Is each sentence true or false?
- The Earth takes about 365 and a quarter days to go round the Sun, so a 365-day calendar slowly drifts. A leap day every four years fixes most of the drift. The rule used today was set by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582: century years are leap years only if they divide by 400.
- Invented guild stories to learn from. Never try fire, hot metal, glass, blades or power tools on your own: crafts like these are learned with a trained adult.
- Every craft came from many people in many places. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Craft knowledge — You understood how this craft works.
- Making it well — You put the steps in a sensible order and used the right tools.
- Care for people & planet — You kept people safe and used materials wisely.
In real life
Computers and phones follow the same rule. The year 2100 will not be a leap year, and software that forgets this rule can show the wrong date. Some luxury watches have a perpetual calendar, with gears that know the length of every month and leap years.
Watchmakers
The guild stories are invented, to learn from. Fire, heat, blades and tools are only for trained adults: learn these crafts with a trained adult, never at home. Nothing about you is collected; progress stays on this device.
