Clocks that never tire — Watchmakers · The Makers
On the guild wall hangs a long timeline with the dates torn off. Tilly wants to rebuild it to show how clocks became more and more exact.
Your task
Put the steps of the story in order.
- Each new kind of clock counted something that repeats faster and more evenly: a shadow moving, a swinging weight, a vibrating crystal, and finally atoms. In 1967 the second was defined by the vibrations of caesium atoms: exactly 9,192,631,770 of them.
- Invented guild stories to learn from. Never try fire, hot metal, glass, blades or power tools on your own: crafts like these are learned with a trained adult.
- Every craft came from many people in many places. Nothing about you is collected.
Score
- Craft knowledge — You understood how this craft works.
- Making it well — You put the steps in a sensible order and used the right tools.
- Care for people & planet — You kept people safe and used materials wisely.
In real life
The satellites of GPS carry atomic clocks. Your phone works out where you are by comparing their time signals, and a mistake of one millionth of a second would put you hundreds of metres off.
Watchmakers
The guild stories are invented, to learn from. Fire, heat, blades and tools are only for trained adults: learn these crafts with a trained adult, never at home. Nothing about you is collected; progress stays on this device.
