Speed compares the distance travelled with the time taken. It helps us describe and compare moving objects.
What speed means
Speed tells us how much distance an object covers in a certain time. A toy car that travels farther in one minute is faster than one that travels less far. Speed is about movement, not about how big or heavy the object is.
Why we measure speed
Saying that one runner is fast is not enough: we need a fair comparison. People measure distance and time to plan journeys, set race records and make roads safer. This idea grew from the need to predict how long moving things would take to arrive.
A bicycle ride
Mia cycles 120 metres in 30 seconds. First, divide the distance by the time: 120 ÷ 30 = 4. Her speed is 4 metres per second. If Leo cycles 90 metres in 30 seconds, Mia is faster because she covers more distance in the same time.
The distance alone is not speed
A common mistake is to say that the person who travels farther is always faster. That seems reasonable because we notice the final distance first. But time matters too: someone may travel 100 metres slowly while another travels 80 metres quickly. Compare distance and time together.
Speed outside school
Speed appears on bicycle computers, car dashboards and race timers. A train timetable also uses speed: the distance and travel time help predict arrival. These measurements are useful, but a high speed is not automatically better; safe travel often means slowing down.
