Friction can help or hinder motion — Physical education, 11–13 years
Friction is a contact force that resists sliding, but it also gives us grip. Understanding both sides explains shoes, brakes and why surfaces matter.
What friction does
When two surfaces touch and one tries to slide, friction pushes against that sliding. It can slow a moving object, but it can also stop your feet slipping or let a bicycle brake work. Rougher surfaces often give more grip, though not always.
Why we need friction
People first noticed friction as a problem when carts and tools became hard to move. They also noticed that removing too much friction made walking and stopping impossible. This is why machines use oil to reduce unwanted friction, while shoes and tyres are designed to increase useful grip.
A shoe on a floor
Imagine pushing a shoe across a wooden floor with a force of 6 N. Friction pushes back with 2 N, so the unbalanced force is 6 − 2 = 4 N forwards. If the floor is wet and friction falls to 1 N, the forward force becomes 5 N, so the shoe speeds up more easily.
Friction is not always bad
A common mistake is to call friction a force that only wastes energy. That seems sensible because friction can make parts warm and slow machines down. But without it, your foot would slide backwards when you walked, and a bicycle brake could not grip the wheel.
Friction in everyday design
Trainers have patterned soles to grip the ground, while ski bases are made smooth to slide. Car tyres need friction to steer and brake, but their bearings use lubricants to reduce friction inside moving parts. Designers choose more or less friction for a particular job.
