  1. Speed describes motion

    Speed tells us how much distance an object covers in a certain time. It lets us compare a slow walk, a bicycle ride and a train using the same idea.

  2. Forces change motion

    A force is a push or a pull. Forces can start, stop, speed up, slow down or turn objects, and several forces can act at once.

  3. Energy can be transferred

    Energy is not a substance kept in one place. It is a way to track what can make changes happen, and it can move between objects or change form.

  4. A circuit must be complete

    Electric current can flow around a complete conducting path. A battery provides a push, and components such as lamps transfer electrical energy into light and heat.

  5. Mass and weight are different

    Mass tells how much matter an object has. Weight tells how strongly gravity pulls it, so the same object can weigh differently on different worlds.

  6. Density compares mass with space

    Density tells how much mass is packed into a certain volume. It helps explain why some objects float, sink or feel surprisingly heavy for their size.

  7. Pressure depends on force and area

    Pressure describes how concentrated a force is over an area. The same force can have a gentle or powerful effect depending on how much surface receives it.

  8. Heat flows from warmer to cooler

    Sound begins with something vibrating and reaches us through a material such as air, water or metal. Its pitch and loudness come from different features of that vibration.

    Light from a source reaches an object and can reflect into your eyes. This explains ordinary sight, mirrors and why changing the light can change what you see.

  12. Changing state does not make a new substance

    Melting, freezing, evaporating and condensing change how particles are arranged and move. The substance stays the same, which helps explain water, weather and reversible changes.

  13. Magnets exert forces without touching

    Magnets can push or pull certain materials across a gap. The idea of a magnetic field helps us describe this invisible effect and predict where it is strongest.

  14. Light reflects from surfaces

    Seeing a mirror image is one example of reflection: light changes direction at a surface and then travels to your eyes. The angle of arrival and the angle of departure are equal.

  15. Light changes direction when it changes medium

    Light travels at different speeds through materials such as air, water and glass. When it crosses the boundary, its direction can change, making objects under water look displaced.

  16. Levers trade distance for force

    A lever can make a load easier to move by using a rigid bar and a turning point. The nearer your effort is to the pivot, the greater the force advantage, but the handle must travel farther.

  17. Matter is made of tiny moving particles

    A particle model helps us explain what happens inside solids, liquids and gases, even though we cannot see their particles directly.

  18. Materials expand when warmed

    Heating usually makes a material take up slightly more space, while cooling makes it contract. This small change matters in bridges, rails and measuring instruments.

  19. Fluids push up on immersed objects

    Water and air can push upward on objects inside them. This buoyant force explains floating, sinking and how large ships can stay on the surface.

  20. Electrical resistance changes current

    Resistance is how strongly a component opposes electric current. It helps explain why wires warm up and how devices control the current they use.
