Measuring length fairly — Physical education, 4–6 years

We can compare lengths by placing objects together, but a shared unit lets people compare things even when they are far apart. The unit must be used from end to end without gaps or overlaps.

Idea

Length tells us how far it is from one end of an object to the other. We can measure by repeating equal-sized steps, blocks or ruler marks. If the same unit is used carefully, two people can understand the same number and compare their results.

Why

Saying “it is five hand spans long” works only if everyone’s hands are the same size. People needed a fair way to build, trade and describe distances, so they agreed to use repeatable units and tools. That is why rulers have equal marks instead of random spaces.

Worked example

Sara measures a pencil with cubes. She puts the first cube at one end, then places the next exactly against it, with no gap. She repeats this five times until the other end is reached. The pencil is five cubes long; a gap or overlap would make the count unfair.

Common trap

It is easy to place the measuring units with tiny gaps because the objects are hard to line up. It may then look as though the object needs more units, even though the gaps are not part of it. Start at one end and keep each unit touching the next.

In the world

People measure tables before making tablecloths and measure rooms before choosing carpets. Builders measure wood, walls and doorways so parts fit together. Cooks also measure lengths when cutting dough or arranging food, although not every real task needs a ruler.
