Pushes and pulls
Forces can make things start, stop, turn or change shape.
Gravity pulls things down
Gravity is the pull between objects, especially the Earth and everything near it.

Friction is a contact force that resists sliding, but it can also help us move and grip.

Magnets can act without touching and have two ends with different behaviours.
Sound comes from vibrations
Sound starts when something moves back and forth. You can feel this movement in a guitar string, a speaker or your own throat.
Light and shadows
Light travels from a source, and objects can block it. A shadow shows where light could not reach.
Materials can change state
Heating and cooling can change a material from solid to liquid or gas, and back again. The material is still made of the same stuff.
A simple circuit
Electric current needs a complete path. A battery, wires and a lamp can work together when the path is closed.
Air resistance
Air can push against moving things. This helps explain why a paper sheet falls slowly and why a parachute opens.
Floating and sinking
An object can float when water pushes up enough to support it. Shape matters too, so a heavy steel ship can float while a small steel nail sinks.
Heat moves
Heat moves from something warmer to something cooler. This explains why a hot drink cools in a room and why a fridge can keep food cold.
Levers trade force for distance
A lever helps move a load by turning around a fixed point. A longer handle can make the push easier, but your hand then travels farther.
Measuring mass with a balance
A balance lets us compare how much matter objects have, even when their sizes look different.
Temperature tells how hot or cold
A thermometer gives a number for hotness or coldness, so we can compare and control conditions more carefully than by touch alone.
Conductors and insulators
Some materials let electric current pass easily; others make a barrier. This helps us choose materials for wires and for safe coverings.
Wheels and axles make moving easier
A wheel turns around an axle, allowing an object to roll instead of scraping along the ground. This can make moving loads easier, but it does not remove all effort.
Speed tells how fast something moves
Speed compares the distance travelled with the time taken. It helps us describe and predict motion.

Elastic materials change shape when pushed or pulled, then return when the force stops. This is different from a material that stays bent or stretched.
Pulleys can make lifting easier
A pulley is a wheel with a groove for a rope. It can change the direction of a pull, and several pulleys can share the load.
Reflection makes mirrors work
Light can bounce from a surface instead of being absorbed or passing through. A smooth surface sends the light in an organised direction, so we can see an image in a mirror.
