Friction is a contact force that resists sliding, but it can also help us move and grip. Physical education, 7–10 years.

Surfaces rub

Whenever two surfaces touch and one tries to slide over the other, friction pushes against that sliding. A rough path usually gives more friction than a smooth floor. Friction can slow a skateboard, warm your hands when you rub them and stop your shoes from slipping.

Why learn about friction?

People needed to understand why carts stopped, why tools wore out and why walking was possible at all. Friction solved one problem and caused another: it gives grip, but it also wastes movement as heat and wear. Studying it led people to choose rough soles, smooth bearings, oils or brakes for different jobs.

Example: two toy cars

Mia rolls two identical toy cars from the same starting line. Car A travels 120 centimetres on smooth card; Car B travels 70 centimetres on a towel. The towel has more friction, so it removes the car’s movement more quickly. The car has not become heavier or weaker: only the contact between its wheels and the surface changed.

The common mix-up

It is easy to call friction a nuisance because it makes a ball stop and wears down shoe soles. That is reasonable: too much friction can waste energy. But saying friction is always bad misses its useful side. With no friction between your shoes and the floor, your foot would slide backwards instead of pushing you forwards.

Choosing the right grip

Tyres have patterned treads so they grip wet roads, while ice skates use a smooth blade to slide across ice. Bicycle brakes press rubber against a wheel to create friction and slow it down. Dancers may use special powder to control grip, showing that the best amount of friction depends on the task.
