Heavy and light
Weight tells us how heavy something is. A large cushion can be lighter than a small stone, so size alone does not tell us the weight. We can lift two objects or use a balance to compare them fairly.
Why compare weight?
People need to know what they can carry, what may break a shelf, and which object will pull a balance down. Looking can be misleading, especially when one object is big but full of air. Comparing weight gives information that shape and size cannot give alone.
Use a balance
Place a toy car on one side of a balance and a wooden block on the other. The car’s side goes down, so the car is heavier than the block. Replace the car with a feather: the feather’s side rises, so the feather is lighter. The balance compares them directly.
Big does not mean heavy
A child may choose a large empty box as the heavier object because it takes up more space. That is a reasonable guess: we often connect “big” with “a lot”. Lift both objects or place them on a balance, and let the movement—not the appearance—show the answer.
Weight in daily life
Weight matters when carrying a school bag, choosing a toy to lift, or packing a suitcase. A delivery worker checks parcels so they are safe to carry, and a cook weighs ingredients for a recipe. These situations need comparison or measurement, not just a guess from size.
