Two equal parts

When one whole thing is split into two parts that are exactly the same size, each part is a half. Two halves fit back together to make the whole. The parts must be equal; two random pieces are not necessarily halves.

Why make equal halves?

Sharing one thing between two people is fair only when both receive the same amount. Cutting a sandwich down the middle may work, but a sloping cut can still make unequal pieces. Looking for two equal parts helps us share food, materials, and turns fairly.

Half an apple

Take one apple as the whole. Cut it through the middle, then compare the two pieces: their shapes and sizes match, so each is half an apple. Give one piece to each person. Put together, the two pieces are the original whole apple.

Two pieces are not always halves

A child may call any two pieces halves, even when one is much bigger. That is a reasonable mistake: the object was split into two, and “half” sounds like “one of two”. Compare the pieces by placing them together; if one sticks out, they are not equal halves.

Sharing and making

Halves appear when people split an orange, a piece of paper, or a round cake for two. They also help with making things: folding a sheet in half can make matching sides. In real life, the pieces may not be perfect, so we check rather than trusting the cut.
