A shape that matches itself

A shape has line symmetry when one side is the mirror image of the other side. Imagine folding it along a special line: the two halves would land exactly on top of each other. The line does not have to be vertical; it can be horizontal or slanted.

Why people noticed symmetry

Symmetry helps us describe shapes without listing every detail twice. Long ago, builders and makers needed balanced designs for tools, buildings and patterns, while people noticed symmetry in bodies, leaves and animals. Folding, mirrors and careful drawing gave them a way to check it.

Checking a rectangle

Draw a rectangle that is 6 cm wide and 3 cm high. Fold it from top to bottom: the top and bottom edges meet, so there is a horizontal line of symmetry. Fold it from left to right: the side edges meet, giving a vertical line too. It has two lines of symmetry.

Balanced is not always symmetrical

A shape may look balanced because its two sides have similar amounts of colour or size, but that is not enough. When folded, matching points must land in exactly matching places. This mistake is understandable: our eyes notice overall balance before they notice a small bump, gap or different angle.

Where symmetry appears

You can see symmetry in a butterfly, a leaf, a snowflake and many tiles or logos. Designers use it when making a pattern that should repeat neatly, and engineers use balanced shapes in some bridges and machines. Nature often comes close to symmetry without being perfectly exact.
