How far something turns
An angle is the amount of turn between two rays that start at the same point. A quarter-turn is a right angle, a half-turn is straight, and a full turn brings you back to where you began.
Why measure angles?
Saying that a corner is small or wide is not precise enough for building, drawing, or turning. Degrees give everyone a shared way to describe a turn: a full turn has 360 degrees and a right angle has 90.
Find the missing turn
A robot turns 90 degrees to the right, then 90 degrees again. Two quarter-turns make half a turn. Since a half-turn is 180 degrees, the robot has turned 180 degrees and now faces the opposite direction.
The longer line is not the bigger angle
An angle can look bigger when its arms are drawn longer, so this confusion is understandable. But angle size depends on the amount of turn, not on the length of the lines. Imagine rotating one arm until it meets the other.
Directions and design
Angles guide road signs, clock hands, ramps, roof shapes, and computer games. A navigation arrow may ask for a 90-degree turn, while an engineer checks angles so two pieces fit safely together.
