Two systems guide sleep

Sleepiness comes from two forces working together. One is sleep pressure, which builds the longer you stay awake; the other is your body clock, which uses signals such as daylight to help time sleep and alertness. Together they explain why bedtime can feel easier on some nights than others.

Why sleep matters

The brain uses sleep to strengthen useful memories, organise learning and help control emotions. The body also uses it for growth, repair and immune defence. This idea became important because people noticed that too little sleep makes attention, reaction and decision-making worse, even when someone feels able to carry on.

A late-night example

Suppose you usually sleep at 22:30 and wake at 07:00, but study until midnight for three nights. You lose 90 minutes each night, so the sleep debt reaches 270 minutes, or 4.5 hours. A single long lie-in may not fully fix it; returning to a steady routine and allowing enough sleep is more realistic.

The weekend reset trap

Many people think sleeping very late at the weekend completely resets the body clock. It is a reasonable idea because extra sleep can reduce some tiredness. But a large shift in bedtime and waking time can make Sunday night harder, so a fairly regular rhythm usually helps more than a dramatic reset.

Preparing for a better night

You can use this idea before an exam, a match or a trip. Keep wake-up times fairly steady, get daylight during the day, and make the last part of the evening calmer and less bright. These steps support sleep, but they cannot replace medical advice if sleep problems continue.
